In Fort Collins, their Senior Advisory Board obtained a grant allowing it to start a mobile veterinary service for seniors called Elder Pet Care. What a great idea!! Seniors are charged based on a sliding scale for veterinary services performed at their homes. The program is now self-sustaining after ten years.<br /><br />Some transit systems, like the city of Loveland, CO are also on board by allowing pets to ride in crates. Transit systems in Boston, Toronto, Seattle and San Francisco allow full size dogs on leashes to come on board as well as ferries in some of these cities.<br /><br />I think all these programs are worth duplicating across the United States. In this tiny bedroom I had a tiny bed barely big enough to hold me let alone my 2 dogs Bozo and Sparky.<br /><br />And of course my 2 dogs loved to sleep in the same bed as me but there just wasn't enough room. So I decided that the next best thing would be for me to build them dog pet beds in the corner of my tiny bedroom. The only problem was space or a lack of space where I could build 2 separate dog beds.<br /><br />I have always believed in mans ingenuity and his ability to create solutions where no solutions seem possible. So I racked my brains and came up with an ingenious solution to the space problem.<br /><br />I made a blue print of my dog pet beds and early on a Saturday morning I went to the lumber yard and got all the necessary lumber to build the dog beds. When I got home I decided I wanted to make this a surprise for my dogs Bozo and Sparky so I locked myself in the tiny bedroom and started sawing and nailing the bed frames.<br /><br />I was determined to finish the dog beds by bed time so my dogs would have brand new beds to sleep in that night. I worked diligently without rest and by bed time I had finally completed the dog beds.<br /><br />I opened the door to my bedroom and let Sparky and Bozo in to see their new sleeping quarters. And the ingenious idea I had come up with to solve the lack of space problem was that I had built dog bunk beds. That's right, one bed on top of the other. I had even hand crafted a small ladder that could be used to climb up to the top dog bunk bed.<br /><br />My 2 dogs seemed very pleased with their new sleeping quarters. But a problem arose. Both dogs wanted to sleep in the bottom bunk bed?<br /><br />It was at this point that I realized that dogs couldn't climb ladders.<br /><br />That put me right back at square one. Because only one dog could sleep in the dog beds I had built the other dog slept with me. But the dog sleeping by himself would get lonely and would join me and the other dog in my bed.<br /><br />I couldn't get a decent nights sleep. I solved this problem by moving to a bigger house with a bigger bedroom and getting a bigger bed.<br /><br />And even though my solution of building bunk beds for my dogs didn't work out I still thought it was ingenious. If you are in the market for one, here is what to look for:<br /><br />The heated dog bed should be UL and CUL certified to ensure safety and ideally have a steel-wrapped cord in case your dog is a chewer.<br /><br />Dual thermostats are preferable to automatically ensure consistent temperature; 102 degrees is an optimal temperature for dogs. Look for a heated bed that provides a full-range, variable heat control. Beaver asks.<br />She likes to give pet owners an analogy using people.<br />Just as our feet would start to blister from the hot metal within seconds, a dog's paws are at the same risk.<br />Dog's paws are not the only concern. Debris from the wind can cause major damage to Rover's eyes and nose, she says.<br />Beaver notes that although the pressure from the wind does not usually cause problems, it's the small sticks, pebbles and acorns that are the most common emergency.<br />The way dogs are restrained can also be dangerous.<br />Beaver recalls one tragic incident where the owner risked having his dog in the back.<br />Although the owner tried to take caution by restricting the dog with a rope, too much slack was given.<br />"We've seen people driving down the road literally dragging their dog because it had enough length of the rope to jump out of the truck, but could just barely reach the ground," she states.<br />Beaver says that if you insist on putting Rover in the back, make sure the rope is short enough so he cannot reach the sides or tailgate.<br />Before you even consider throwing your dog in the back, you might want to consider the penalties.<br />Although there are currently no national or state laws prohibiting dogs in pickup trucks, many local governments are taking their time to save dog's lives.<br />Beaver says it's best to check with your city or county officials to see what their policies are before you find yourself paying a hefty fine.<br />Between potential veterinary bills and penalties, Beaver says the best alternative is to leave the dog at home.<br />However, if it must tag along, the safest way to travel with your pup is with him inside the vehicle.<br />It depends on how active Rover is as to whether a cage is needed. In this tiny bedroom I had a tiny bed barely big enough to hold me let alone my 2 dogs Bozo and Sparky.<br /><br />And of course my 2 dogs loved to sleep in the same bed as me but there just wasn't enough room. So I decided that the next best thing would be for me to build them dog pet beds in the corner of my tiny bedroom. The only problem was space or a lack of space where I could build 2 separate dog beds.<br /><br />I have always believed in mans ingenuity and his ability to create solutions where no solutions seem possible. So I racked my brains and came up with an ingenious solution to the space problem.<br /><br />I made a blue print of my dog pet beds and early on a Saturday morning I went to the lumber yard and got all the necessary lumber to build the dog beds. When I got home I decided I wanted to make this a surprise for my dogs Bozo and Sparky so I locked myself in the tiny bedroom and started sawing and nailing the bed frames.<br /><br />I was determined to finish the dog beds by bed time so my dogs would have brand new beds to sleep in that night. I worked diligently without rest and by bed time I had finally completed the dog beds.<br /><br />I opened the door to my bedroom and let Sparky and Bozo in to see their new sleeping quarters. And the ingenious idea I had come up with to solve the lack of space problem was that I had built dog bunk beds. That's right, one bed on top of the other. I had even hand crafted a small ladder that could be used to climb up to the top dog bunk bed.<br /><br />My 2 dogs seemed very pleased with their new sleeping quarters. But a problem arose. Both dogs wanted to sleep in the bottom bunk bed?<br /><br />It was at this point that I realized that dogs couldn't climb ladders.<br /><br />That put me right back at square one. Because only one dog could sleep in the dog beds I had built the other dog slept with me. But the dog sleeping by himself would get lonely and would join me and the other dog in my bed.<br /><br />I couldn't get a decent nights sleep. I solved this problem by moving to a bigger house with a bigger bedroom and getting a bigger bed.<br /><br />And even though my solution of building bunk beds for my dogs didn't work out I still thought it was ingenious. Tucked away in a side alley across the street from Trader Joe's, the specialized dog store quietly goes about its business, one canine at a time.<br />Owners Roberta Stone and Paul Miller have combined their skills as breeders, groomers, trainers and all-round dog lovers to create a dog-focused and dog-friendly store, spa and training facility that caters to a discriminating clientele.<br />“We don't sell the run-of-the-mill stuff that you find everywhere,” said Miller, whose background is in dog food, nutrition and training. “We sell the stuff that the professional dog people need. When you talk to us, we're knowledgeable about what people use and what really works.”<br />Stone has raised dogs in Novato for 40 years, specializing in Stonewood Poodles. “She's probably your oldest entrepreneur in the county,” said Miller of his 74 year old business partner. “You've never met anyone with as much energy.” Despite being a 50-year resident of Novato, Stone was actually born in Italy and she named the store after her mother's maiden name - Puccini.<br />The company is also a manufacturer of pet beds which Stone has been making locally for 20 years. She originally started the business as a stay-at-home mom and 15 years later she moved the sewing room into the current store and warehouse. The retail aspect of the business eventually dominated the commercial space and now the sewers work at home.<br />Miller noted that American manufacturing has faced an uphill battle over the past few years due to cheap, off-shore competition.<br />“There used to be a hundred dog bed companies and now there's a thousand,” said Miller. He has seen dog beds on sale at dog shows for as little as three dollars - a price point that makes competition impossible. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but to a small business owner it is also frustrating and potentially disastrous, financially. In this tiny bedroom I had a tiny bed barely big enough to hold me let alone my 2 dogs Bozo and Sparky.<br /><br />And of course my 2 dogs loved to sleep in the same bed as me but there just wasn't enough room. So I decided that the next best thing would be for me to build them dog pet beds in the corner of my tiny bedroom. The only problem was space or a lack of space where I could build 2 separate dog beds.<br /><br />I have always believed in mans ingenuity and his ability to create solutions where no solutions seem possible. So I racked my brains and came up with an ingenious solution to the space problem.<br /><br />I made a blue print of my dog pet beds and early on a Saturday morning I went to the lumber yard and got all the necessary lumber to build the dog beds. When I got home I decided I wanted to make this a surprise for my dogs Bozo and Sparky so I locked myself in the tiny bedroom and started sawing and nailing the bed frames.<br /><br />I was determined to finish the dog beds by bed time so my dogs would have brand new beds to sleep in that night. I worked diligently without rest and by bed time I had finally completed the dog beds.<br /><br />I opened the door to my bedroom and let Sparky and Bozo in to see their new sleeping quarters. And the ingenious idea I had come up with to solve the lack of space problem was that I had built dog bunk beds. That's right, one bed on top of the other. I had even hand crafted a small ladder that could be used to climb up to the top dog bunk bed.<br /><br />My 2 dogs seemed very pleased with their new sleeping quarters. But a problem arose. Both dogs wanted to sleep in the bottom bunk bed?<br /><br />It was at this point that I realized that dogs couldn't climb ladders.<br /><br />That put me right back at square one. Because only one dog could sleep in the dog beds I had built the other dog slept with me. But the dog sleeping by himself would get lonely and would join me and the other dog in my bed.<br /><br />I couldn't get a decent nights sleep. I solved this problem by moving to a bigger house with a bigger bedroom and getting a bigger bed.<br /><br />And even though my solution of building bunk beds for my dogs didn't work out I still thought it was ingenious. Our kids are our kids, our dogs are our dogs, and never the twain shall meet. That said, with both kids heading to college in August, it’s a good bet that Jake, Molly and Sydney will be enjoying a lifestyle upgrade as autumn approaches.<br />Part of this has to do with purely practical matters. Kids demand and deserve much of their parents’ attention. After the kids are taken care of, then it’s dog time. No kids at home means, theoretically, we have more time to devote to the dogs. That’s their story anyway. The dogs, not our kids.<br />Pets do have some advantages over kids. None of our three pups have ever asked for their own mobile phone. And that means we’ve never had the heated discussion over how outrageous their charges for text-messaging were in a given month.<br />No matter how smart any of our three dogs may be, we’re never going to fret over being able to send them to a really good college. The closest we ever got to this was when Jake was sent to dog boot camp several years ago for some attitude adjustment. Suffice to say it worked better for him than rehab did for Lindsay Lohan.<br />Dogs never “need” new clothes, mp3-enabled running shoes, a new laptop or ask for a car. They don’t surf the Net for naughty pictures or put up scandalous personal myspace.com pages. I don’t have to worry that their CD collection is going to have inappropriate lyrics.<br />None of our dogs will ever be seen out at a late-night club with Paris Hilton.<br />Not that they’re without their quirks. They’re pretty adamant about feeding time, getting lots of cool water during the hot months and the three huge dog beds my wife bought for them.<br />And it may be a good that we have extra time to devote to the three amigos, as they’re pretty upset over all these allegations surrounding Mike Vick and his alleged ties to dog fighting. All three believe that dogs were put here for a lot of reasons, but tearing into each other under the guise of entertainment is not one of them.<br />And while they let the justice system run its course where Vick is concerned, they’ll be rooting for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this fall.
